For a short while, we shed our predefined real-life identities and got to know our colleagues from an entirely new perspective.
We spent last Friday and Saturday in Hengdian World Studios. Over these two days, KPIs and sample approvals faded into oblivion; all we had was a group of teammates, a script, and a makeshift film set.

Our preselected script was Reborn: Travel Back in Time to Serve as a Palace Maid. Its delightfully absurd premise freed everyone from professional pretensions. Roles were assigned purely by random draw, with no room for picking or choosing.
Those who landed leading roles embraced their parts cheerfully, while members cast as background extras with merely one line took their assignments in stride. This random allotment forged a unique sense of fairness. At work, we are constantly boxed in by labels: top-performing sales, new parents, fitness enthusiasts, gaming aficionados. But the lottery erased all such titles in an instant. Rank, seniority and outstanding employee accolades no longer mattered; we were just ordinary people waiting to find out our parts.
That is the true essence of team building: breaking free from our monotonous daily roles to uncover the authentic sides of one another.
II. Cloaked in Ancient Robes, We Became New Versions of Ourselves
Costume fitting turned into a lively affair inside the dressing room, with hair ornaments, waist sashes and official hats passed around nonstop. Our usually stern operations manager slipped into a nanny’s headdress; our reserved design colleague lit up with energy the moment she put on a palace maid’s outfit.
Many voiced the same thought: “I never knew you had this side to you.”
This unexpected revelation stands as the most precious takeaway of our trip. Draped in unfamiliar attire and delivering lines not our own, hidden facets of our personalities—wit, clumsiness, shyness and boldness—naturally surfaced. We were not merely acting out fictional roles; we revealed our genuine selves behind the costumes.
Filming was far from seamless. Flubbed lines, uncontrollable giggles and misplaced blocking forced countless retakes, yet no one grew impatient or complained. We understood perfection was never the goal; what counted was building something together as a team.
III. An Evening at the Qingming Riverside Landscape Park: Joy With No Practical Purpose
Shooting wrapped after sunset, and we headed for Qingming Riverside Landscape Park.
The molten iron fireworks show kicked off soon after. Superheated molten iron was whipped against the night sky, bursting into cascades of golden sparks. Surrounded by throngs of sightseers snapping photos and cheering, we lifted our phones to freeze the fleeting spectacle. Some were awestruck by the display, others came just for casual fun, yet we shared the same magnificent firework sky alongside crowds of strangers.
During the park’s live NPC quest activities, we darted across the grounds with paper banknotes won from interactive games. Those banknotes could only be redeemed for a single postcard in the end, yet no one felt shortchanged. The delight stemmed not from the prize’s monetary value, but from the sheer pleasure of racing to complete a trivial little mission.
None of these happy moments tied to performance metrics or work efficiency. They reminded us why we strive at work in the first place: to live a fulfilling life, one enriched with such seemingly useless, priceless joys.
IV. A Half-Day Leave for Children’s Day: Quiet Thoughtfulness From the Company
June 1st marked Children’s Day, and the company issued a simple notice: any employee raising a child under 14 could take the afternoon off.
